Research, important as it is, is not the be-all and end-all of human life, or even of human professional life; and every librarian does not have to be a “researcher” in order to prove the hairy-chested masculinity of the profession. Research is too important to be left to dilettantes and amateurs, and its pursuit should be reserved for those who are qualified for it by aptitude, education, and motivation.
意思大概是,研究是一件很重要的事情,但不是人类生活的要义,甚至不是人类职业生活的要义。每个图书馆员不需要非成为研究者以证明职业的阳刚之气。研究太重要所以不能留给那些业余爱好者,而应该成为有天资的、受过教育和有动力的人的追求。
